Match Report
Saints lifted the Munster Junior Cup at Cooke Park with a comprehensive 3-0 win over local rivals Clonmel Town. The 1st quarter of an hour saw very few chances with both sides taking time to settle. Saints could have taken the lead on 22mins when Davy threaded though a lovely ball for olde Chawkie to run on to, but his shot was well saved by Stephen O’Neill in goal. Clonmel Town should have scored themselves on 24mins when Robbie Boland shot over from 6yards. Saints began to take control of the game with Davy running the midfield. Chawkie cut in from the left on 26mins but was unlucky to hit the post. Saints were nearly punished on 32mins when a back pass was left short and Robbie Boland intercepted, lobbing Kevin in goals but it rebounded off the crossbar. Saints took the lead on 34mins when a Dennis free kick was headed down by Davy at the far post for Hawk to finish. Saints continued to press with Hawk heading just over on a couple of occasions.
Saints had a great chance to go two up within a minute of the restart when Hawk put Padge though but his shot was hit straight at the keeper. Clonmel Town came more into the game without having any real chances, but disaster struck for Clonmel on 68mins when their no. 3 was sent off for deliberate handball on the edge of the area. Saints took full advantage on 76mins when a cross from Padge sailed straight into the top corner of the net to make it 2-0. Clonmel had to push forward, leaving gaps at the back. Saints exploited this on 84mins when Davy put Seanie Cummins through and he neatly slotted the ball past the keeper to make it 3-0.
A great win for Saints and a good team performance. Paul Tobin was a rock in defence and Davy controlled the midfield.
