Supporters Club tournament May 18 2008 at the Emirates

Everyone had a great time over the weekend. Tipp lads stayed in Manor House and arrived fresh for battle. Didn't go too badly in the tournament - drew first game with Tralee 0-0 after several good chances to put something on the scoresheet. Second match v Sweden also ended in a draw 1-1, Declan O'Brien scoring whilst with our defence were responsible for a late equalizer! We beat South Wales by 2-1, Declan again on the scoresheet, this time without the hand-assistance(!), and a spectacular scramble over the line by Tom Slattery put us ahead whilst he did the splits. The Swedes went through, ending our chance to advance to the quarter-finals. We took the opportunity to use the away dressing-rooms to get back into the day clothes and headed upstairs to Club level for light refreshments and to watch the final where Norway were beaten by Hungary 2-1. Arsenal.com have a feature on the event at Fanzone/Supporters Clubs. Team: Jason Gallagher, Colin Price, Sean Murphy, Tom Slattery, Phil Blake, Declan O'Brien and Aidan O'Brien.

A wonderful decision by the organizing team (!) to leave at a reasonable hour sees all 12 on the bus by 4pm in Tipp. We’re ready …but is the transport? After the shock of discovering that no-one on board has a clue about mechanics we can only hope it gets us to the top of the hill at Cork Airport. Mercifully it does and we are on our way from the spanking new terminal but not after taking the call from the restaurant staff to tell us our chips are ready – (you had to be there!) On to everybody’s favourite part of modern-day flying – the security check-in. All almost through…but what’s this? A lethal concoction of deodorant in two passenger’s bags.. and each with the same surname!! Into the hold with them – and with an extra half-hour’s wait at Stansted the fragrant duo are lucky they’re not spending the flight there too!! By 11.30pm we’re settled in nice and quietly for a good night’s sleep…not! The pulling power (!) of Polish house and dance music means Eddie Meehan, Richard McCormack and Willie and Margaret Gilsenan along with side-kicks Declan O’Brien and Jane Williamson head downstairs to the Spring Park. At 2.45am they’ve had enough – the bones are creaking and sweat pumping – and they’ve only been playing pool! An early start, some Arsenal shopping, as you do, and an appearance on Setanta television later and we are comfortably seated in Row 5 of the Upper Stand at the Emirates with John Hickey and Michael Burke and some of the Limerick lads. We relax before our heroes turn on the style. Unfortunately the expected cakewalk doesn’t happen and all are quite happy to collect a laboured three points to keep us in our rightful position at the top of the table. Irish international Paul McShane is sent to the line for a woeful scathing tackle and the Tipp lads join in the chorus of “just like your manager”. Obviously over the next couple of games the Wicklowman will have a similar tackle at Croker termed a “well-timed challenge”!!! Most of the chaps and chapesses retire for the post-mortem to the Twelve Pins with Mark and Marie McGuire where an outdoor beverage or two are partaken of whilst there is widespread criticism of the London drivers – and that comes only from the ladies in our group!! There’s also time to “identify” all those passing in the buses as current and former Arsenal legends, most bearing no resemblance to who they’re supposed to be. Maybe the eyesight is no longer 100%. Phil Blake gathers the troops at 6pm and all head off merrily for the airport after collecting the now heavily – laden baggage. We decide to take the direct route via Tottenham Hale – I mean what kind of an eejit would have you taking the Liverpool Street/Kings Cross by-pass? In no time at all we join our three Ahmish friends at Stansted. After reception by the very kind Polish lady to book us in we trudged warily through security making sure any Sunderland fans eat humble pie on the way. Shoes off and a long wait for Gillie later we get in to conversation with an inebriated Scottish Gooner who invites us to join him for the rugby. It doesn’t work out and we chill out eating chilli crisps whilst finally convincing oor pal we’re actually Argentinian. So to the highlight – a pretty usual trip to WH Smith by Sean Wright sees him return to us in a state of exhilaration. "It's Van Persie - Van Persie - he's in the shop"...The reactions are typical. "Just go away" - or words to that effect. As Sean topples over with excitement Eugene Dunne, Francis Meehan, Con and Thomas Mulcahy all rush to their new favourite shop – never has it taken so long for a footballer to buy a Kit-Kat and Skittles with a credit card as a now overwhelming crowd descends on the tills. Van Persie in the flesh! Numbers are swelling and things are getting frantic. Phil poses with Van the Man but he dashes off mid-photo as his wife calls him for the flight. As Francis gets his shirt signed – a story we’ll no doubt hear about once or twice in the future, a lady assistant says “this must be some of these footballing guys?” Honestly, some women have no class.

Tipperary Town and District Arsenal Supporters Club send sincere sympathy to the family of the late Frank Malone from Tipperary Town and originally from Tallonstown, Co Louth whose untimely death occurred on Wednesday April 27. Frank was a member of our club since it’s inception six years ago and delighted in all things to do with Arsenal FC. The Gunners were a very big part of his life. He attended all our social meetings and very many of our trips to Highbury. Indeed earlier this year I suggested that he accompany me to London for the game against Bayern Munich. Thinking he would be delighted with the opportunity, I was shocked by his reply “Ah no”. Believing that he may not be feeling the best I thought it wiser not to pursue the issue. Moments later Frank called me back “I’d like you to get a ticket for me for Munich!” That was Frank - expect the unexpected! So with typical determination he was in attendance on a cold snowy night in Munich earlier this year for that Champions League clash. Unfortunately the team were not as determined! On the occasion of our Family Day in Clonmel just before Christmas he came away the winner of a framed “Arsenal legends” clock - something I am sure that took pride of place in his home as he watched his heroes and gave out about the tactics, the line-up or whatever else was going wrong in the game. Frank, like all the rest of us amateur managers in the Club would know far better than Arsene Wenger any day of the week! He will be greatly missed by all in Tipperary Arsenal Supporters Club, may he rest in peace.

COMMUNITY SHIELD CARDIFF 7 AUGUST 2005

A relaxing Saturday morning sees the Tipperary contingent of Brian McLoughlin, Tom Slattery, Robert Culhane, Michael Ellard, Anthony Quinn, Seanie Murphy, Colin Price, Jason Gallagher & Michael Harding at collected at 8.30am. Somebody of course has forgotten their passport - who can that be? On for Phil, Ann-Marie & Johnny in Cahir, a quick smoke and off to Clonmel for the final pick-up. Tony Butler has arrived with his camera from the local paper to take a picture of some dignitaries leaving Clonmel for the day, can’t find them and ends up having to take a snap of the Arsenal lads heading for Cardiff - bang on time the rain comes and everyone rushes for Devitt’s bus. Everyone is in great form and this continues as Waterford and New Ross are passed. Declan tells the first of 7,003 jokes we are subjected to (only havin’ you on b-b-bible salesman!) over the next four days. Larry and the Hills encourage everyone to take some light refreshments in Rosslare. They are quickly joined by Kieran Ryan and Willie McGarry - Jack is also forced in there against his wishes! The posse head on to the boat after hearing some more of Deccie’s side splitters to plenty of laughs from Marian & Dave and the Fehillys and Hewitts. Paul, Martin and Michael Morrissey enjoy the Lynx spin and in no time at all we are Allen’s bus to Caerphilly. To have McDonalds and Pizza Hut beside the hotel is a welcome boon for Ian & David. Sheila, the Walshs, Stapletons, Fennessys and O’Flahertys almost buy the total menu at the restaurant as the younger ones head for Cardiff’s nightlife. Meanwhile Deccie is still going…! It’s Sunday - the day of reckoning. Off to Cardiff on the Cresta coach. After a trip to Ann Summers ( a bookshop I think!) Deccie exits and tells of some watering holes he has found on a previous shopping trip. These are sited close to traffic lights where he can practice his art of the Oriental wheel washer / human windscreen-washer and hotshot rapper while finding some of his long lost cousins, twins and “Arsenal legends.” Meanwhile Liam Reidy gives Paul some tips on how to perfect the perfect throw-your-pint-across-the-street-at-the-Chelsea-mooner. Ooh-aah seems to have picked it up perfectly! And the match…. Arsenal hav-

e 58% of the possession, all of the attacking, the most supporters, the best singers but still manage to lose by 2-0 in the magnificent surroundings of the pole-free Millennium Stadium - Hleb maybe setting himself up to be a new star while Cygan confirms our thoughts that he should shine the boots of Clonmel Town’s under 11s! No breakfast on Monday and a 13-hour wait for the boat doesn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the Cardiff 41 as Georgie Pyke ends a winning weekend with a pocketful of change from the three sons as everyone gets ready to pay their deposit for the next trip. Roll on another great season to be a Tipp Gooner!

GIVEAWAY DAY 2005

Another great Tipp Arsenal Supporters Club day out at Cornys of Tipperary on May 8 2005 saw some very valuable prizes finding new homes. Congratulations to Declan Stapleton on winning the €100 club cheque, to Chris O’Flaherty went the Arsenal fleece, the Arsenal away jersey to Paddy Kennedy, the Untouchables DVD to Dave Fennessy and the framed Arsenal picture to Eddie O’Meara. Also winners on the day were Tom Slattery and Paul Roche with Arsenal mouse mats whilst Jason Gallagher went home with the Unbeatables mug. A few well-chosen words from club chairman Benny Ellard extended our sympathies to the family of our great friend Frank Malone and with all present thanked for their support so the curtain came down on yet another very successful year for Tipperary Town and District Arsenal Supporters Club.

Diary of a trip to Highbury December 4/5 2004

Saturday morning at 3.40am and the alarm of hearing Do They Know It’s Christmas at full blast is almost too much to take. The big news is we’re heading for The Home Base of The 49ers so it’s well worth struggling out of bed. Everyone on the bus is in great form and this continues through Shannon and Heathrow. Phil and Larry take the posse to Finsbury Park whilst the The Workout Crew of Paul, Ned, Ronan and David volunteer to show their muscles to bring all baggage to The Travel Inn. The Walshs, Stapletons, Fennessys and O’Flahertys almost buy World of Sport out and Arsenal FC are delighted to see the Tipp crew back again as lots of Arsenal.com plastic bags exit. After a pit-stop it’s on to Highbury where Alan and Denise and the Jones’ delight in their views from the Lower North Bank. Upstairs the fitter ones climb the 300 steps with ease (!) to end up almost in the clouds - but what a view! Big team news with the safe hands of Almunia replacing the slightly less safe hands of Lehmann. Brian, Liam, Kevin and the O’Deas give it plenty of vocal as things hot up following SuperBob’s opener - from 18 yds - you wouldn’t need too many fingers to count those up this season! The piece de resistance comes with World Player’s goal from out of nothing showing exactly what we need to see more often this season and his bullet header (more a stumbled connection) completes a fantastic day. We just won’t leave without taking the obligatory pictures of the crew ( that means us with every steward and first-aid man in sight, with even Gunnersaurus thrown in for good measure ). A slightly longer pit-stop at The Gunners this time and spirits are high. After an hour on the tube we are at base for the night. After a bit of welcome grub everyone is ready to settle down except a Team Leader (nameless) who tries a variety of rooms before being satisfied! More runny eggs, a quick nip to Heathrow and we’re through Shannon and home before we know it - more great memories stored away. Roll on the next one!

The Birmingham team -David Fennessy, Marian Fennessy, Brian McLoughlin, Noeleen O’Flaherty, Eddie O’Meara, Larry Fahey, Liam Reidy, Ronan McGrath, David Moore, Phil Blake, Chris O’Flaherty & Declan Stapleton. In front are John Walsh, Sheila O’Dea, David O’Dea, Ciaran Stapleton and Philomena Stapleton. (Photographer has been shot!)

Arsenal v Newcastle - Emirates Stadium 18th November 2006 The weekend started with 31 bleary eyed but eager Gooners departing at 3 am Saturday morning for flight from Shannon at 6.30 am. All was going to plan until we reached the security gate at Departures and discovered that some guys (no names) felt that they did not need a boarding pass - and thus began the Sheppard’s’ duties. After finally getting through security, Jack decided that he would treat everyone to a drink and being the flamboyant type all were treated to only the best – “ Lyons Gold Blend ’’ (with some assistance from his nanny in London) The flight was on time and apart from the odd bout of the ‘Hakka’ and some hearty chuckles from the front of the audience we touched down safely in Shannon. All went well through security and baggage collection but we suffered our first casualty as soon as we got into arrivals – poor Noeleen got an attack of the ‘Spend, Spend, Spend’ syndrome and a reluctant Chris had to medi-vac her to the nearest resuscitation centre in Oxford Street. Taking the bus from Stansted to Liverpool Street was definitely a bad idea and after about a 40 minute wait (thankfully no rain) we were on our way. Got the tube on Piccadilly line to Manor House and 50 yards away we were in our hotel, Kent Hall, basic but adequate – definitely a good location for future trips. After a good breakfast it was off to visit Mecca – and what a sight, the Emirates is awesome and has to be seen to comprehend. It was at this stage we suffered our next casualty – Martins blood / alcohol level dropped dangerously low and looking deathly pale of white he was stretchered off to the nearest watering hole (ably assisted by a multitude of volunteers – isn’t humanity just wonderful). After a couple of hours of treatment Martin (and the volunteers) seemed to respond miraculously and spirits were at an all time high (brandy, vodka, whiskey etc). Noticing that the flock was getting restless and with the multitudes descending on the hallowed ground, the experienced Sheppard’s knew the time was right to make the last final assault and so with Magners in hand they moved their flock up Drayton Park, across the Emirates bridge, through the turnstiles and began the ascent to the upper tier. After several resuscitations the Holy Grail opened up before our eyes and what a sight. The stadium is magnificent, the pitch is in top condition, seating is extra wide and padded with more than enough leg room. Overall everything is top class with the only complaint being the quality of the food.- pretty bad. Expectations were high for a good result but that was soon put in jeopardy when we went one nil down. Arsene’s selection gamble wasn’t working (as well as some of the team). Overall the game was poor but Thierry came to the rescue with a magnificent goal and with Given in top form a draw was probably the best we could get. A new policy at the Emirates is to encourage the supporters to stay on after the game where highlights and player / manager interviews are shown on the big screens. The usual refreshments were consumed after the match and despite the best efforts of the Sheppard’s, the flock dispersed. It was thought initially that the Tipp contingent had headed for the bright lights but was later discovered that they decided to take a 20 mile hike around Holloway road and back to the hotel – such determination to avoid the dreaded alcohol is to be admired. And so the show began. With the front audience in fine fettle, Deccie started off with the Hakka, progressed through some awful jokes (alcohol levels not yet at required peak) and through sheer determination finally won over the locals. He then pulled off a master stroke when he duped all and sundry (even Cygan) to buy wigs in a local store jointly owned by Deccie and the local Y.M.C.A. branch. At this stage the show deteriorated and turned pink. It’s amazing how alcohol and Y.M.C.A. tunes can affect large and not so large (mums the word J ??) men. Enough said, a good night was had by all. Sunday morning was for relaxing, and was followed up with an excellent tour of the stadium at 1.30 pm. It’s amazing to see how pampered our heroes are, so 100% commitment at all times is not too much to expect from them. After buying out the All Arsenal Store (ably assisted by Francis) we started the long trip home finally arriving at base at 1.30 am Monday morning. A good trip was had by all, the only negative point being the bus from Stansted – definitely a private bus from Stansted to the hotel for future trips.

May 2004 - A dream comes true for Tipperary Arsenal Supporters

The Tipperary Supporters ready to take the field!

The lads check out the surface at Highbury

Nine Tipperary Arsenal Supporters were lucky enough to be able to take part in a 7-a-side tournament, played on the hallowed turf at Highbury. The tournament took place before the Martin Keown testimonial. It was a magnificent opportunity to play on one of the best surfaces in the world and especially as the stadium has only two more seasons before it is replaced. The lads did the club proud winning three and drawing one out of the four games played, without conceding a goal. Unfortunately it was not enough to win as they were beaten by Denmark on goal difference. This was the club’s fist time playing in the tournament and hopefully not the last.
